Get recessional song inspiration for your 'We did it!' moment..

You did it! You’ve both said “I do”, kissed and made it official. It’s time to start your celebrations by walking back down the aisle together to some awesome, super-happy music!

What better way to get things going, than with a euphoric song to dance down the aisle to together. Choose something you both love, that reflects you as a couple, and captures the happiness of the moment. So what’s your style: a song to skip to, a song to shimmy your shoulders to, or just a good old happy strut?

Whether you’re a dance-loving couple, want a chilled acoustic vibe or just love rocking out, there’s a track – and an artist – who can play it just the way you want. Think Pharrell in a gospel style, upbeat soul on piano, acoustic Beyoncé, or Little Mix on harp…These wedding recessional songs, performed by Alive’s acoustic wedding bands and ceremony musicians will give you ideas and inspiration for an awesome ceremony send-off.

Tip: Practice timing yourselves as you walk back down the aisle, and ask your musician to kick in with the verse or chorus, so you can hit the aisle at the perfect moment for full impact!

After they said ‘You may kiss the bride’, the whole place filled with this really upbeat, really good fun recessional song, which we danced back down the aisle to – it was brill!

Your Wedding Recessional FAQs

A wedding recessional is the final part of a wedding ceremony, when the newlyweds and the wedding party exit the ceremony space by walking down the aisle together, usually accompanied by suitable music. Depending on the ceremony type, the recessional is usually led by the newlyweds, and can be followed by the bridal party, and then the couple’s immediate family. Finally, the guests will leave the ceremony space.

Following the recessional, everyone will usually gather to start celebrating the new marriage, with a congratulatory drinks reception.

You usually need one recessional song to walk back down the aisle to.

The ceremony exit song was traditionally a slow track, but nowadays, recessional music is often happy and upbeat, with a fast tempo. If you choose an upbeat song, you’re more likely to walk – or bop! – down the aisle fairly quickly, so consider the length of the aisle at your ceremony, the length of your song, and time yourself walking out to it.

Plus, to highlight the happiness of your ‘just married’ moment, you may want your recessional walk and your music to start at a specific climax in the song. Remember to let the person in charge of your ceremony music (your musician, band or your ceremony DJ) know this, so they can time everything perfectly for you.

A good song to walk out to after you are married will depend on the mood you want to create. It's a joyful, happy moment, so you'll want to reflect this.

Recessional songs have traditionally been slow numbers, allowing the newlyweds to have a leisurely promenade down the aisle together, greeting guests as they pass, and drinking in the moment. In modern times, there has been a move towards more upbeat, contemporary tracks that provide a high-energy feel as the couple practically dance down the aisle, often encouraging jubilant applause and audience participation, and maximising the celebratory mood.

Pick something that reflects your style, and know that whatever you choose, big smiles are guaranteed!
