Is the Father-Daughter dance first?

Not traditionally. At most weddings, the Father-Daughter Dance comes second, after the bride and groom's First Dance.

Traditionally, the Father-Daughter Dance directly follows the First Dance: As the First Dance finishes, the groom makes way for the bride’s father to take to the floor with the bride. At this time, the groom may also dance with the mother-of-the-bride, however you may want to give the floor to your father-daughter dance, with all other dances taking place afterwards.

How long is a Father-Daughter dance?

A father-daughter dance can be as long as you like, bearing in mind your guests, who are patiently waiting to party. You can choose for your father-daughter dance to take place for the whole duration of a song (around 3-5 minutes), or just dance with your Dad for a short while, and invite others onto the dancefloor part-way through the song.

Is there a Mother-Son dance at weddings?

You can choose to have a Mother-Son Dance at your wedding. This would usually follow the Father-Daughter Dance, but both can take place at the same time. If the Mother-Son Dance takes place after the Father-Daughter Dance, the bride’s mother and father can take to the dancefloor together at the same time.

Does the bride dance with her father-in-law?

The bride can dance with her new father-in-law at the same time as the Mother-Son dance.

It’s up to you whether each of these dances takes place for a whole song, or just part. Bear in mind bridal party dances can take around 20 minutes in total, but you can pick and choose which dances you want to perform. If you are sticking with the whole shebang, it’s worth making an announcement early on so your guests can get ready for the show, before they’re let loose on the dancefloor.
