Dr Feelgood – Wilko Johnson
Seasons 1 & 2
Singer-songwriter and guitarist Wilko Johnson – of ‘70s blues-rock band Dr Feelgood fame – plays the tongueless Royal executioner with a piercing stare, Ser Ilyn Payne. Ironically, the musician’s role is anything but ‘feel good’ as, under the command of mega-baddie Joffrey Baratheon, Ser Ilyn dispatches Ned Stark in one of GoT’s biggest shock moments.

The National
Season 2, Ep 9 – ‘Blackwater’
American indie rock band The National perform this episode’s end credits track, The Rains of Castamere, composed by Ramin Djawadi. The ‘Lannister’ song is sung and whistled at various points throughout the series, becoming a portent of impending doom (see below!)...

Snow Patrol – Gary Lightbody
Season 3, Ep 3 – ‘Walk Of Punishment’
Lead singer and guitarist of Irish rock band Snow Patrol, Gary Lightbody plays a Bolton soldier in a troupe that have captured Brienne of Tarth and Jaime Lannister, and are on the road to Harrenhal. Gary leads the soldiers in singing The Bear and The Maiden Fair as they make their way through the woods.

The Hold Steady
Season 3, Ep 3 – ‘Walk Of Punishment’
Brooklyn-based rock band, The Hold Steady recorded The Bear and The Maiden Fair for this episode’s closing credits. A song popular throughout Westeros, the lyrics were written by George R. R. Martin, and the music was composed by Ramin Djawadi. It also forbodes a later episode where Brienne, armed only with a wooden sword, faces a real bear, and is rescued by Jaime Lannister.

Coldplay – Will Champion
Season 3, Ep 9 – ‘The Rains of Castamere’, AKA The Red Wedding
Coldplay drummer Will has a short cameo in the band during the infamous Red Wedding episode. A Thronie himself, he jumped at the opportunity, “I loved the books and I loved the show. I asked if I could visit the set to say hello, and they said at the time they were casting for someone to play the drums in the wedding scene, and I was really lucky that it came about. I absolutely loved every second of it, and everyone involved in the production was super-nice, incredibly professional...it was a great experience.” You can catch a glimpse of Will just before the action all kicks off...

Animal Circus – Joel Fry
Seasons 4 & 5
Part of four-piece rock-reggae-ska band Animal Circus – and also star of TV’s Plebs – Joel plays the former slave trader and Meereen nobelman Hizdahr zo Loraq, who is briefly engaged to Daenerys Targaryen, before his untimely demise.

Sigur Rós
Season 4, Ep 2 – ‘The Lion and the Rose’
Best known in the UK for creating the theme tune for the BBC’s Planet Earth series, Hoppípolla, Icelandic experimental-rock band Sigur Rós perform GoT song, Rains of Castamere at Joffrey Baratheon’s ill-fated wedding to Margaery Tyrell, before being shooed off by the impatient King throwing coins at them. Their version of this song also plays over the end credits.

Mastodon
Season 5, Ep 8 – ‘Hardhome’ and Season 7 finale, Ep 7 – ‘The Dragon and the Wolf’
Three members of the heavy metal band play Wildlings who are killed and turned into Wights in Season 5. Drummer and vocalist Brann Dailor enjoyed filming the carnage, “I watched my best friends Brent [Hinds] and Bill [Kelliher], murdered right in front of me as I myself was stabbed in the stomach and had my throat slit multiple times, and I didn’t mind at all. We are more than privileged and honored to have been a part of one of the greatest stories ever told on film, and the catering wasn’t bad either.” The band also cameo as Wights in the Season 7 finale. And in 2015, the band released a track called White Walkers, which appears on the GoT soundtrack, sampling music from the show.

Of Monsters and Men
Season 6, Eps 5 & 6 – ‘The Door’ & ‘Blood of My Blood’
In Bravos, the Icelandic indie-folk band perform music for a play – The Bloody Hand – as Arya hides in the crowd on a mission as a ‘Faceless Man’. Lead vocalist and guitarist Ragnar þórhallsson explains how their cameo came about: “They were shooting in Iceland a lot, and our drummer, Arnar, had asked [to be] an extra in the show, and the ball started rolling from there. It was quite the experience!”

Ed Sheeran
Season 7, Ep 1 – ‘Dragonstone’
Arya Stark comes across Sheeran – cameoing among a group of Lannister soldiers – on her way to King’s Landing. Sitting around a campfire, he sings Hands Of Gold, before offering her some rabbit to eat. Of all the cameos in GoT, Sheeran’s appearance has become a major flashpoint, with his dedicated scene (not just a background glimpse) charged with ruining the fantasy for some hardcore viewers. The backlash from fans was so severe that Sheeran later deleted his Twitter account. Coincidentally, in Season 8 we learn that the Lannister solider “ginger Eddie” has been brutally burned.

Bastille
Season 7 finale, Ep 7 – ‘The Dragon and the Wolf’
The four piece indie-rock band filmed a cameo as ex-Wildling Wights, while on tour in Belfast. Guitarist Kyle Simmons and the band’s tour manager Dick Meredith made the final cut, as they marched south, towards the Wall.
Florence and the Machine
Season 8, Ep 2 – ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’
Sung by Podrick during this episode, UK band Florence + the Machine perform the haunting end credits, Jenny of Oldstones. The show’s creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss were keen to feature Florence’s otherworldly vocals, saying, “We’re in love with the result.”
The band’s version of the song broke the record for the most number of ‘Shazams’ in a 24-hour period, with around 300,000 Thronies using the app in an attempt to find out who was performing the haunting melody on the show.

Season 8, Ep 3 – ‘The Long Night’
The American country singer plays a wildling turned Wight in the battle for Winterfell. Uber fan, Chris said, “I would gladly fly to wherever in the world just to be a small part and get to watch that show going down.” His bass player, J. T. Cure, and tour manager also cameo in the show.

Season 8, Ep 3 – ‘The Long Night’
Although we’re not entirely sure where they appear, pop princess Sophie Ellis-Bextor and her husband Richard Jones – bass player with prog-pop band The Feeling – shared photos on Instagram to prove they were extras. In The Long Night, the musical couple fight in the Northern Army, defending Winterfell from the Army of Wights.
Sophie said of their costumes, “R was very jealous of my armour but then again, he has dragon glass.” Despite being near impossible to spot, the pair loved playing their part, with Richard posting, “it was dark, hard to spot us, but we were there and did our part in defeating the army of the dead... it was so exciting and SO MUCH FUN!!!”

7. GoT Actors Turned Musicians...
They’re a multi-talented bunch, these GoT actors! From love-to-hate-him Ramsay Bolton to the best doorstop the world has ever seen, check out the musical sides of a few of your favourite Thrones characters...
Michiel Huisman / Daario Naharis
The Dutch actor was initially part of a four-piece called Fontane, but is now a solo artist in his own right. Since 2014, Huisman has appeared in the fourth series of GoT, replacing Ed Skrein as Daario Naharis, Daenerys Targaryen’s advisor, enforcer and lover.
Jacob Anderson / Grey Worm
Bristol-born Anderson performs under the pseudonym Raleigh Ritchie and was signed to Columbia records in 2013, with his unique style of alternative RnB. His album debut – You’re A Man Now, Boy – peaked at number 32 in the charts in 2016. He’s supported George Ezra on tour and featured on Stormzy’s debut album Gang Signs & Prayer.

Natalia Tena / Wildling, Osha
As well as playing Osha, multi-talented Tena is known for her role as Nymphadora Tonks in the Harry Potter film series and is also lead singer and accordionist in Molotov Jukebox.
Iwan Rheon / Ramsay Bolton
As well as heading up the list of Game Of Thrones most hated characters, sadistic Ramsay Bolton (if only he’d fed his hounds!), Iwan Rheon has musical bones. Rheon’s been singing and writing songs since he was 16, and was formerly lead singer in The Convictions before leaving to pursue acting. Nowadays he’s recording his own solo work, and released his first album Dinard in 2015.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster / Jojen Reed
A bass and guitar player, Brodie-Sangster learned to play the drums for his role in Love Actually, and also learned to play guitar left-handed for his role as Paul McCartney in Nowhere Boy. Since 2010, he's played bass guitar in blues-folk-jazz band, Winnet. His mother, Tasha Bertram performs lead vocals in the band.

Finn Jones / Ser Loras Tyrell
Music lover, DJ and producer Finn Jones is part of a London-based band called Human Effort.
Rory McCann / Sandor Clegane, aka The Hound
He plays everyone’s favourite fire-fearing grump, but in real life Scottish actor McCann has a flair for music – playing guitar, banjo, mandolin and piano. In the early nineties, he was frontman for a band called Thundersoup.
Jonathan Pryce / High Sparrow
From one of the most hated charactes on Thrones, to belting out some crackers on Broadway, Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce proves he’s a very adaptable man, and boy can he move. Just check out this video of him appearing in Miss Saigon in 1991, singing The American Dream. It’s quite a change from his vice-punishing days on GoT. You won’t see the High Sparrow in quite the same way again...
Jerome Flynn / Bronn of Blackwater
Jerome was part of pop duo Robson & Jerome back in the nineties. They came to fame in ITV series Soldier, Soldier and performed a version of Unchained Melody that reached number 1 in the UK charts, and stayed there for seven weeks!

Kristian Nairn / Hodor
Our door-holding hero now spends his time on the decks touring the world as an acclaimed house DJ. Nairn's immersive dance experience Rave of Thrones has toured across the US and Australia and has become a well-established event in the UK.
Carice Van Houten / Melisandre
As well as bringing people back to life, turns out that Melisandre, well Carice, has a spell-binding voice too. In 2012, she recorded an album titled See You On The Ice (eerily predicting her character's death??!) – worth noting for its kick ass album cover – and performed a track on the original Sky Thronecast series in 2013. Carice also recorded four songs for the soundtrack to film, Black Book. Here she is singing Fear Not, a great first dance contender...
