Aside from trying to get through the vows without your voice-wavering and a tear rolling down your cheek, the next most nerve-wracking thing about your wedding could be the first dance. You’ve got to choose the perfect song and while most couples have ‘their song’ you might be surprised how many other couples out there have ‘your song’ too! The most nerve-wracking thing about the wedding could be the first dance, where everyone else’s eyes are on you!
Aside from trying to get through the vows without your voice-wavering and a tear rolling down your cheek, the next most nerve-wracking thing about the wedding could be the first dance, where everyone else’s eyes are on you and now you and your new husband are tasked with putting on a show of romance and trying desperately not to trip over each other’s feet.
First though, you’ve got to choose the perfect song and while most couples have ‘their song’ you might be surprised how many other couples out there have ‘your song’ too, with the same first-dance tunes popping up at wedding receptions all across the country. Of course they change each year and now as 2013 is already beginning to flash by, let’s see what is lighting up most wedding dance floors and therefore maybe making you start to rethink your choice.

You’ll notice right away that some of these have also been staples of the first dance scene for years…
1. ‘At Last’ by Etta James

‘Aaaaaaaaat last’ this song has made yet another list. You can’t take anything away from it, but you might want to choose something else just so you don’t have one of the most predictable first dances (apologies to anyone that has had this as their first dance – it’s great, really it is!)
2. ‘Everything’ by Michael Bublé 

I’m yet to meet a woman that doesn’t like Michael Bublé but I’m not sure how many guys are fans… This might be a one-sided choice.
3. ‘Make you Feel my Love’ by Adele

This list wouldn’t be complete without an Adele song would it? One of the most chosen artist choices for hopefuls on The X-Factor and also (and not surprisingly) a big favourite of those getting hitched – even if most of her songs are about breaking up.
4. ‘Greatest Day’ by Take That

Is it just me or is this list getting quite predictable? Well I guess that’s the whole point but aside from having a hugely successful comeback, Take That can now also celebrate the fact that they are helping newlyweds get off on the right foot (if they’ve practised enough, that is!)

5. ‘One Day Like This’ by Elbow

Those choosing this one might have thought it would be a more ‘indie’ choice but ever since it was used in every credit and ‘overcoming-obstacles’ sequence in the aforementioned talent show, it was destined to be used as a popular uplifting first dance track.
6. ‘(I’ve Had) the Time of my Life’ by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warner

Yes, believe it or not like The Harlem Shake re-enacting the dance from Dirty Dancing is quite a fad, with couples like this pair rehearsing and rehearsing until they perform the dance on the big day and become a YouTube hit… and maybe some other couples just like the song/movie.
7. ‘You’re the First, my Last, my Everything’ by Barry White

Yes we’re on number 7 and so far this list was missing something very important. This something was that deep, instantly recognisable voice of Barry White, which is usually reserved for the more intimate moment, but this specific track is a wedding favourite.
8. ‘Better Together’ by Jack Johnson

What has Jack Johnson been up to lately? Well even if he’s not playing over the airwaves in 2013, back in 05/06 Better Together would have become many couples ‘song’ and there’s lots still dancing away to it.

9. ‘As Time goes By’ by Frank Sinatra

I must say, even if heaps of other couples are choosing this one, it is a classy choice. From Casablanca, you can’t really get any more timeless than a bit of Sinatra.

10. The Most Unpopular First Dance Song – ‘D.I.V.O.R.C.E’ by Tammy Wynette

Okay instead of making this a full top 10 of first dance songs like every other list – how about finishing on what is possibly the most unpopular choice of first dance song? The title alone is enough to put any loved up newlyweds off… but then again, maybe there are a lot of people out there with a huge sense of humour and love for country music? I don’t know, but has this list made you rethink your choice of first dance? Don’t be put off by something popular if it’s the one for you!
