A Day In The Life Of Shake Rattle And Soul
...A Brilliant Soul Band For Hire.
Birmingham based Soul RnB function band, Shake Rattle and Soul, played at Sarah and Will's wedding reception held at Gainsborough House hotel in Kidderminster on Monday 9th August 2010. Dean Summlar, band leader, singer and guitarist shares the experiences of the day in his photo diary.
Everyone’s favourite day of the week, Saturday, almost certainly means “gig day” for us. As a group of professional musicians, many of the band members work in music through the week. Saturday is our day of real enjoyment when we all get the chance to do what we love best – perform!
Here is a rare sight; a man with an iron in his hand. It must be love (with music that is, not ironing) for a man to be smiling with an iron in his hand. Dean (singer, guitarist and band leader) presses his shirt ready for the show.
The van arrives at my house and we load up the van which goes from empty to full in minutes.
Sam (bass) always says we get paid to load up and set up and we play for the love of it. A desk job looks much lighter on the back!
The van is loaded and with plenty of time to spare the guys head off to the venue.
This week we are playing at Sarah and Will’s wedding reception in Kidderminster, which is local for us and only 45 minutes away.
Having arrived more than 45 minutes early the band enjoy the sunshine and chat whilst we wait for the load in time.
The band set up in 45 minutes which leaves us with 15 minutes to complete our sound check to make sure everything is sounding great before the performance.
Stand in drummer and long time friend of the band, Tim Jones, (ex Chaka Khan and Dizzy Gillespie) sound checks his drum kit.
With a few minutes to go until show time and Tim (keys) looks over the first dance.
Only joking of course, the band have rehearsed the first dance in the week and are all prepared for Sarah and Will’s special moment dancing to “The Way You Look Tonight”.
The band hit the stage and set the dance floor alight from the word go, our trade mark as a band.
We opened with Stevie Wonder’s “Signed Sealed Delivered”. The audience deserted their seats and headed for a space on the dance floor, if they could find one!
The bride and groom come to chat with the band and thank us with a very generous gift after an action packed evening.
Time to pack up, but there’s still time for Dave (trombone) to pose; taking photographs of himself whilst no-one is looking (or so he thinks)
The van is loaded and after a good night’s work, Shake Rattle and Soul feel satisfied that another wedding has gone well and everyone will live happily ever after.
