11.00am
On this particular gig we are flying to Letterkenny, Ireland as the 4-piece band.
We would normally take our own equipment but today our van, pa and lights will stay at home so no heavy lifting this weekend…woo hoo!! Just costumes, wigs and make up.
11.30am
Once at Birmingham airport the guys do the mens work. We meet Emma (Agnetha), check-in, have a bite to eat and board the plane.
2.00pm
We arrive at Derry airport and Ray’s feeling a little peckish. We meet Carolyn (our contact for the event) and she drives us to Hotel Mount Errigal, about an hour away.
3.00pm
On arrival, the lovely Carolyn runs through the schedule over tea and biscuits…very nice.
We are all staying over so check-in, and then go to our rooms.
About 30 mins later…after some lift antics...we finally find our rooms.
We would like to apologise for what occurs in the lift.
3.30pm
Once in our rooms we unpack, iron and set out the costumes and wigs. Very rock 'n roll!
4.30pm
We get a call to sound check. This is probably the most important part of the day. All venues are different and sound can be extremely complex.
It is not a case of just plugging in speakers and saying “1-2”, as some may think. We allow up to two hours to sound check the 4 piece band. Three hours for the 7 or 10 piece band.
After some searching and more lift antics we find our performance room.
The singers wear in-ear monitors, which are tiny speakers that fit in your ear (like a personal headphone). As demonstrated by Vikki (Frida).
Ours are moulded to fit snugly so that they don’t fall out. They are very expensive but a must in our industry. They enable us to hear ourselves when we sing so that we don’t sound like a cat’s choir!! They too can take a while to get right – therefore they are an important element of the sound check.
It is at sound check where we meet our sound engineer, light engineer and today, our DJ for the night. In most cases we supply our own but on this occasion they were supplied locally.
It is very important to strike up a good working relationship with everyone we work with, and these guys were no exception. Good times!! Thanks Barry, Andy and John x
2 hours later…room service!
We then wait and wait and wait….
Greg decides it’s a good idea to go swimming….errr, boredom has set in.
Can we just mention that the ability to wait around is a necessity if you are thinking of embarking on a career in the entertainment industry.
1 hour 30 mins til show time
The transformation begins…make up.
Agnetha is forming…
Beard re-enforcement taking place. “Keep still, Greg!”
The vocal warm up.
“Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh”.
30 mins til show time
Agnetha and Bjorn doing the brushing of wig ritual. Feel the love in the room. We all talk to and pamper our wigs…. a character building bond essential for becoming the 4 members of ABBA.
But seriously, another terribly important investment to any tribute band; top of the range quality wigs.
9.35pm
10 mins til show time. Frida and Benny are ready to rock!
Agnetha’s on her way - flying like an eagle to the lift.
….where’s Bjorn?
And the crowd called out for more!...and more they got
Thank you for the music!
11.45pm
The meet and greet.
When possible, or requested, we are happy to meet the guests/audience for photographs and autographs.
At this gig, as we were staying overnight, we were invited for drinks after we had got changed…. yes, rock 'n roll at last!! So no packing away, loading the van, and travelling home during the early hours for us tonight!! Thank you Alive Network!
11.00am
The morning after
All packed and ready to go…not forgetting, of course, the cheque.
After a pleasant drive back to the airport we say our farewells to Carolyn and leave for the UK, promising to return again along with our other bands, Skool Reunion and 80’s Mania. (Ask Alive Network for more details).
Back in Birmingham around 4.00 pm, and we all go our separate ways…until the next time.
Bye bye Agnetha x
Thank you for taking the time to read our “A Day In The Life Of ABBA Live”. We hope to work with you soon x
