The J booked The Sarah J Band for their event
“Palpably, Alan Bates continues to find off-the-beaten-track talent for his Candid label(s) releases. Firm evidence of this reached my ears in a peak evening during another week, at the Dean Street Pizza Express venue, devoted to this special stable. The latter set included a duet with the attractive young lady who opened the evening - Sarah Mitchell, who had come 'all the way down from Leeds' with her enormously supportive trio. Sarah proved to have two distinct singing styles at her disposal. There is Aretha-type soul/gospel big-voice attack, which she uses on most of her own compositions, of which there were seven. Let Me Apologise was a particularly successful 'soul-strutting' item. Then, early in her set, the ultra-slow verse of The More I See You sounded like someone in a stage musical, as did her measured delivery of What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life? Overall, this dual-personality soul/show presentation had much appeal. LES TOMKINS ”

Wakefield J booked The Sarah J Band for their event
“Sarah Mitchell opened for a double-header at Wakefield Jazz with her quintet. Sarah soon endeared herself to the audience with her candour and easy humour. The music was straight-ahead and included several originals which fitted the style perfectly and went down well. The well-rehearsed band was anchored by Adrian Knowles (bass) and Tim Brickel (drums) and what soloing there was came from Jamie Taylor's smooth guitar and Jason's exuberant piano. But the whole deal was to support Sarah's characterful voice. At times as sweet as her looks and at times with a hard edge that digs into a lyric she has a sound all of her own. Her performance gives the impression of relaxed experience and makes it easy to understand how Alan Bates of Candid was impressed enough to sign her. She joins Jamie Cullum, Yorkshire's Clare Teal, Stacey Kent and Mishka Adams in the label's roster of vocal stars. Chris de Saram ”
